Fred Mathis is a recently retired Deputy Chief with the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Appointed to Chief Deputy in 2014, Fred served as the second in command of the second largest fire department in the country. Overall, Fred served 20 years of high-ranking command experience in the LAFD and dealt with countless emergencies, disasters, and noteworthy events. Under Chief Mathis’ command over 1000 new firefighters were hired.

Fred is the recipient of several awards and joined societies specifically focused on leadership. A former Los Angeles County Deputy, Fred dedicated over 38 years in multiple fields of emergency response including fire, police, and EMS. He is a graduate of the Rio Hondo Police Academy with a certificate in Peace Officer Standards.

Fred received an Associate of Arts in Fire Technology from Los Angeles Harbor College and a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from the University of Phoenix. He also holds a Master’s degree in Executive Leadership from the University of Southern California. Currently, Fred is enrolled at the University of Southern California in the Master of Social Work program. Fred’s goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and work with Veterans and first responders who deal with PTSD.
